Arctic Grayling

Thymallus arcticus

  • Look for the large, sail-like dorsal fin. It's the most eye-catching feature on this fish and much bigger than on most other freshwater species.
  • The flanks can show a pink or iridescent sheen in certain light, giving the fish a colorful, almost metallic appearance.
  • Unlike European grayling, this fish has no spines in its dorsal or anal fins. All the rays you feel are soft and flexible.
  • A dark stripe runs along the side of the body between the pectoral and pelvic fins. Look for this band when the fish is in hand.
