- Look for the trademark red or orange slash marks under the jaw. These 'cutthroat' marks are the clearest sign you've got one of these fish.
- Bonneville Cutthroat are covered in spots that tend to be larger and more scattered toward the tail end of the body.
- Unlike Rainbow Trout, Bonneville Cutthroat lack a strong pink or red lateral band running along the side. Their coloring is more golden-yellow to olive.
- The body has a more slender, streamlined shape compared to hatchery Rainbow Trout, with spots also appearing on the tail fin.
