Mountain Whitefish

Prosopium williamsoni

trout
  • Look for a slender, nearly cylindrical silver body with a dusky olive-green color along the back.
  • The scales have darkened edges that are most noticeable toward the tail end of the fish.
  • Unlike trout or salmon, mountain whitefish have a small mouth located underneath the snout (not at the tip) giving the head a blunt, rounded look.
  • Mountain whitefish have both a small adipose fin (the fleshy fin behind the dorsal) and a forked tail, which separates them from similar-looking cyprinids like chubs or suckers that lack the adipose fin.
